Why are Satan and Jesus Both Referred as Morningstar’s
Dear Family,
Bruce sent me a copy of a chat that happened in chat the other night after I left between Bruce, Dad and Father Steve. They were discussing morning stars and how both Satan/Lucifer and Jesus are referred to as morning stars and wondering why? Enclosed find my response to them in case anyone else is interested.
The first reference to morning stars is found in Job 38:7. Here God is questioning Job and wants to know where Job was
” When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Here is seems to me it is clear that the morning stars are angels who sang together at the time of creation. The word son refers to a created being of God Thus all angels and created things praise God on the day of creation. Another possibility is they both refer to angels. In either case Satan qualifies as we shall see he was an anointed Cherub which is one of the angelic ranks,
The second is in Isaiah 14:12 in reference to someone called Lucifer says
“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!”
The name Lucifer means morning star. In context Isaiah is referring to the king of Tyre but many me included believe he is also referring to Satan or Lucifer. Morning star refers to the brightness of the morning star just before dawn usually identified as Venus. So then in what way is Lucifer like the morning star? In Ezekiel 28:13 following the prophet describes how Lucifer/Satan was in Eden and how he was created perfect with no faults in him, with a covering of precious stones until iniquity in the form of pride showed itself. At that Satan becomes puffed up convinces a third of the angels to join him and rebels against God. At that point God casts him out along with his followers to the earth.
Undoubtedly then Satan/Lucifer was a very beautiful creature. Some believe he was even the worship leader in heaven prior to his fall. Personally I find no scriptural basis for that and therefore reject it. The one verse many try to use Isaiah 28:13 says he was simply a workman in musical instruments and nothing about leading worship anywhere. However he was a very beautiful creature who apparently shone brightly just like the morning star. However I believe that was corrupted when Lucifer/Satan fell. So how does this apply to today?
The Apostle Paul tells us in II Corinthians 11:14 that Satan transforms himself into an angel of light and thereby deceives many. This shows that Satan pretends to be an angel of light or a morning star. He pretends to be a bearer of truth, to be a light to the right path so he can deceive and fool others. However those who follow him will find out he was not what he was pretending to be and find themselves separated from God for eternity in pain and suffering. So how does this contrast with the true morning star Jesus?
In Revelation 22:16 Saint John the Revelator says
“I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.”
In John 1:9 says that Jesus is the true light that comes to give light to everyone who comes into the world. In John 8:12 Jesus says he is the light of the world. Light drives away darkness so we can see clearly. It also illumines the path before us so we can see where we are going. John also confirms this in John 14:6 when he Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. Thus Jesus is the real deal not a counterfeit like Satan/Lucifer. If we let the light of Jesus illumine our hearts then He will show us the truth and the way we need to go to have eternal life. He is the bright star, the bright beacon shining on the path before us so we don’t stumble or fall or get off track. If we do stumble, or fall or get distracted then he is there to show us where we missed it, pick us back up again and get moving forward again. II Peter 1:19 speaks of the morning star rising in our hearts. Thus Jesus the true Morningstar wants to arise in us I believe so he then can shine brightly through us to others so they may come to know him also. In Revelation 2:28 Jesus says he will give the morning star to those who overcome. In the preceding verses he is talking about giving power over the nations to those who overcome and to those who keeps his works to the end.. Thus Jesus gives us of himself so we can in fact through the power of the Holy Spirit that he sends we can keep his works and ultimately rule over the nations.
In closing then, the differences between Lucifer as a morning star and Jesus as the Morningstar is that one is based on his physical beauty that he possessed at one time and still pretends to have in order to deceive people and which will eventually lead them to hell. The other is based on real truth that can set us free, transform and change us, and lead us to God and heaven for eternity. Hope this helps explain things and is understandable.
